GLENVILLE, WV — Glenville State University and the West Virginia Storytelling Guild are hosting a youth storytelling camp for the third consecutive year. The week-long event, “Come Spin a Tale,” culminates with a free concert on July 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the Mollohan Campus Community Center.
The camp, running from July 22–26, welcomes incoming ninth to 12th-grade students and recent high school graduates. Each day features workshops led by notable storytellers James Froemel, Mike Perry, and Judi Tarowski. The evening concert showcases the campers’ newfound storytelling skills.
Participants learn key storytelling techniques, such as character development, audience engagement, improvisation, and the use of body language and vocal inflection. They also explore personal narratives and the art of tall tales.
“One of the goals of the West Virginia Storytelling Guild has always been to keep storytelling in the mountains a part of our folk culture,” said Jo Ann Dadisman, co-director of the camp.
The evening concert will feature performances from both the campers and the West Virginia Storytelling Guild. Additionally, The MacAbre Brothers, comprising Glenville State Chemistry Professor David O’Dell and Pete Kosky, will perform ballads.
