Country music artist Kate Boytek recently took the stage at the 37th annual Boone County WVU Alumni and Friends Pig Roast and Mountaineer Music Frolic, held at WaterWays Outdoor Amphitheater in Julian. This event, organized by the Boone County WVU Alumni Association, has become a staple in the community for raising scholarship funds. This year, the fundraiser amassed nearly half a million dollars, further supporting future West Virginia University students.
“I am truly honored to be part of this incredible fundraiser to help rural students go to college, many times as the first college student in their family,” Boytek said. “Music has the power to bring people together and make a real difference, and I am humbled I was given the opportunity to support this wonderful cause!”
The Boone County fundraiser has a rich history, dating back to 1987 when it was established by 10 WVU alumni who each contributed $100. That initial effort raised $1,000, which was used to help one local student attend WVU. Over the years, the event has blossomed into a highly anticipated occasion, generating over one million dollars and funding 500 scholarships. This makes the Boone County alumni group the leading provider of scholarships among all WVU Alumni chapters. Organizers highlighted that the event, which featured Boytek’s performance, showcased the power of community in supporting its residents.
Beyond her musical endeavors, Boytek is also known for her community involvement. She has participated in events like Healing Appalachia, which raises awareness about opioid addiction, and she actively promotes music education in West Virginia public schools. In addition, she has performed for West Virginia AmeriCorps staff and volunteers to express appreciation for their service. Boytek’s upcoming 2024 tour is presented by the Town of Gilbert’s Convention and Visitors Bureau.
