The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources has confirmed a new state record for channel catfish, caught by a Wayne angler. This catch represents the sixth record achievement of 2024.

“West Virginia’s incredible fishing opportunities continue to amaze and attract anglers from near and far and this record-breaking achievement showcases the world-class fishing adventures our state has to offer,” said Governor Jim Justice.

John Tyler Rutherford, who caught the fish, measured 43.51 inches and weighed 46.70 pounds. He reeled in this impressive channel catfish from his father’s farm pond in Wayne County on July 21, surpassing both the length and weight records previously set by Alan Burkett of Moorefield in Hardy County. Burkett’s records were established in 2022 and 2023, respectively, at South Mill Creek Lake in Grant County.

“I want to congratulate John Tyler Rutherford on his outstanding catch,” said WVDNR Director Brett McMillion. “This remarkable achievement highlights the superior quality of West Virginia’s fisheries and the dedication of our team in maintaining and enhancing these aquatic resources.”

Rutherford used worms for bait during his fishing expedition. WVDNR District Fishery Biologist Jeff Hansbarger and Assistant Fishery Biologist Jake Whalen were on site to measure and weigh the record fish.

In addition to the channel catfish, this year has also seen record catches of tiger trout, redbreast sunfish, bowfin, redear sunfish, and black crappie.
