West Virginia launches MEDALS Project to enhance antibiotic stewardship in nursing homes

The West Virginia Department of Health has launched the MEDALS Project, an innovative initiative designed to enhance antibiotic stewardship in nursing homes statewide. This program was officially introduced during a webinar with the West Virginia Healthcare Association, marking a significant step towards improving infection prevention standards.

The MEDALS Project aims to recognize and reward nursing homes that excel in infection prevention efforts. The next phase of the initiative will feature a presentation at the Quality Insights nursing home meeting in August, reflecting the state’s dedication to fostering best practices and ensuring high-quality care for vulnerable populations.

“The MEDALS Project represents a crucial step forward in safeguarding the health and well-being of our nursing home residents,” said Sherri Young, Secretary of the West Virginia Department of Health. “By promoting initiatives that emphasize infection prevention and responsible antibiotic use, we aim to enhance patient outcomes and reduce the threat of antibiotic resistance.”

Nursing homes involved in the MEDALS Project will be evaluated on specific criteria that recognize various levels of achievement. This structured approach encourages continuous improvement and establishes a benchmark for excellence within West Virginia’s healthcare community.
