CHARLESTON — The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) revealed the finalists for the 2025 West Virginia Service Personnel of the Year. This accolade honors the dedication and excellence of service personnel within the state’s public schools.

- Julia Dopson, Burke Street Elementary School, Berkeley County
- Nicole McCulley, Center McMechen Elementary School and Glen Dale Elementary School, Marshall County
- Kasey McCulty, Wirt County Middle School, Wirt County
- Kelly Pritt, Braxton County Middle School, Braxton County
Cynthia Carper, a 34-year veteran school bus operator in Jefferson County, is renowned for her kindness and compassion. Carper greets students and strives to create a welcoming atmosphere, setting a positive tone for the day. She also serves on Jefferson County’s Recruitment and Retention Committee and distributes book bags and school supplies to children in need.
Julia Dopson, a 19-year veteran kindergarten aide at Burke Street Elementary in Berkeley County, has received many awards, including the Berkeley County Schools Distinguished Service Award. Dopson creates a productive learning environment, tailoring engaging instruction to individual needs. Her superintendent said she ensures students feel welcomed and equipped for success.
Nicole McCulley, a school librarian at Center McMechen Elementary and Glen Dale Elementary in Marshall County, fosters a love for learning by organizing monthly service projects and raising funds for students in need. McCulley continuously seeks innovative ways to engage students through reading resources and interactive technology, showing exceptional support for special education students.
Kasey McCulty, a computer technician at Wirt County Middle School for six years, integrates new technologies like laser engravers and commercial slushie machines. McCulty prepares netbooks for students to use during the summer and manages HVAC systems to create comfortable learning environments. He is also on the safety committee and advocates for service personnel in decision-making processes, inspiring students through STEM initiatives.
Kelly Pritt, a secretary at Braxton County Middle School for five years, manages school finances and takes on maintenance projects to support students. Pritt volunteers for classroom transformations, showcasing her commitment to the school community and making her an invaluable asset to school operations.
“Service personnel form the backbone of schools statewide, ensuring students are thriving in safe learning environments. They have an invaluable impact on those around them including students, faculty and staff,” said State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt. “I am thankful to be a part of this recognition that highlights their contributions to public education in the Mountain State.”
