Young Filmmakers Camp returns to Buckhannon for 9th year

BUCKHANNON — ART26201 is gearing up to host its 9th Annual Young Filmmakers Camp in Buckhannon, with space still available for aspiring young filmmakers. The camp will run from July 29 to August 2, 2024, at the LASCAUX Micro-Theater.

The week-long workshop, supported by West Virginia Wesleyan College, will offer students aged 12 and up a comprehensive introduction to the world of filmmaking. Through hands-on learning, participants will explore the essentials of storytelling, screenwriting, videography, and editing in a collaborative environment. The camp’s faculty includes accomplished instructors Andrew Carroll, Jon Benjamin, Jess Johnson, and Bryce O’Loughlin.

Andrew Carroll, the Chair of the English Department at Elkins High School, will guide students in using narrative nonfiction storytelling to enhance their critical thinking and writing skills. Carroll has also spent the past decade documenting old-time music and square dance across West Virginia.

Jon Benjamin, an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at West Virginia Wesleyan College, brings over 20 years of professional experience. He has created several short documentaries and promotional films, and he teaches video production.

Jess Johnson, who hails from Summersville and now resides in Elkins, has a passion for working with young people. Johnson previously led a teen program at the Elkins-Randolph Public Library and looks forward to being part of the Young Filmmakers Camp each year.

Bryce O’Loughlin, a media producer and performer from Buckhannon, rounds out the team. A graduate of Tulane University with a degree in film studies and digital media production, O’Loughlin has worked on various film projects and as an anchor/reporter for a West Virginia news station.

At the end of the camp, student-produced films will be showcased at a special screening event, allowing participants to celebrate their accomplishments with friends and family.

The camp will run daily from 9 AM to 4 PM. Snacks and drinks will be provided, but students are asked to bring their lunch each day. The fee for the camp is $150, and the organizers encourage early sign-up to secure a spot. Participants should include their T-shirt size when signing up.
